Angry fans and netizen took to social media to slam the film's production house for keeping Heard as part of the superhero star-cast, while opting to remove Depp from the third part of the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise, following his libel case.

"Amber Heard is still in Aquaman 2 when she physically and mentally abused her husband And it’s on tape??? I’ll pass," said a fan in a tweet.

Another added, "Congratulations on ruining Aquaman2, it's exactly what you deserve. Ok People aren't stupid. We've heard Amber Heard admit to chronically abusing Johnny Depp."

"So we all agree that we are boycotting Aquaman 2 because of Amber?" another asked.

Yet another fan rejoiced that the hashtag that went viral last November was back on the world trends. "It's finaally trending again," said the fan in a post.

Johnny Depp made headlines last year when he announced that he will no longer be portraying the dark wizard Gellert

Grindelwald

in the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise. His exit from the film came days after he lost his libel case against a British tabloid that published an article in 2018 alleging he was a "wife-beater."

The news of his exit came as a shock to fans who have slammed the production house - Warner Bros, for allowing Amber Heard to continue playing her part as Mera in ‘Aquaman 2’ and Zack Snider’s '

Justice League

'. Calling out the “double standards” of the production company, fans took to social media to demand Amber’s removal from the upcoming film.

However, the production house seems to have stuck to its decision to allow the actress to continue playing her part in the superhero franchise.

Meanwhile, Danish star Mads Mikkelsen was roped in to replace Depp as the wizard in the hit fantasy franchise. Admitting that he didn't know if Depp losing the role was fair, Mikkelsen said he knew the third film was still on track.

"I mean, obviously, they were going to do the film, and obviously he was not involved anymore," the actor said in a report on PTI.

"But I didn't have a dog in that fight. And I don't know what happened (in his private life), and I don't know if it was fair, him losing the job, but I just knew that the show was going on, and I would've loved to have talked to him about it if I had the chance, but I just don't know him in that sense," Mikkelsen added.

The actor, known for Hollywood films 'Casino Royale' and 'Doctor Strange', was rumoured to be playing Grindelwald in the yet-to-be-titled 'Fantastic Beasts 3' late last year. The studio only confirmed his casting a week after the reports surfaced online.

Director James Wan, on the other hand, signalled the start of the DC sequel titled '

Aquaman

and The Lost Kingdom'. In an Instagram post, the director shared that the superhero film starring Jason Momoa in the lead has been titled, 'Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom'. The director posted the photo from the sets and wrote in the caption, "Day One. #aquaman2."

'Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom' is slated has a release date of Dec. 16, 2022.
