Jennifer Garner recently spoke about the emotional toll the devastating Palisades Fire has taken on her and her community. During an interview with MSNBC’s Katy Tur, the actress revealed that she lost a close friend in the fire, which destroyed countless homes in the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood.
Garner shared that her friend couldn’t escape in time, making the tragedy deeply personal for her. While speaking alongside Chef José Andrés of World Central Kitchen, who was assisting with relief efforts, Garner became visibly emotional. She expressed that the loss was especially sensitive for her church community, saying it was too soon to discuss it in detail.
The actress reflected on the extent of the destruction, noting that over 5,000 homes were lost in the fire. She shared that she could name at least 100 families she personally knows who have lost their homes. Garner described the Palisades as a vibrant neighborhood filled with families and children.
She recalled fond memories of the area, including her best friend’s house, which had a gong in the front yard that signaled kids to return home after playing in the street. The neighborhood, she said, was full of life, with children running around and participating in community events like Fourth of July parades.
Standing on Fiske Street, surrounded by the remnants of the once-thriving neighborhood, Garner described the heartbreak of seeing it in ruins. She highlighted the resilience and dedication of the local firefighters, expressing gratitude for their efforts to protect what they could.
Though her own house was spared from the flames, Garner admitted feeling a sense of guilt when walking through it, knowing so many others had lost everything. She expressed deep sympathy for her friends and neighbors, calling the loss overwhelming.
