Dev Patel plays Ramanujan, a self-taught man who lived in poverty in Madras and went on to become one of the greatest mathematical minds of the 20th century. Jeremy Irons essays the role of Hardy, who recognised the young lad's promise and arranged for him to travel to Cambridge. There, Ramanujan became his prot'g' and collaborator on a series of startling breakthroughs that continue to influence mathematical thoughts even today. The

movie

also stars Devika Bhise as the mathematician's wife Janaki. Her training in classical Indian dance helped the actress in her role. The research she had done on Tamil culture also helped her add to the nuances of her character.
