James Cameron is one of the most revered and respected filmmakers in the Hollywood industry. He is credited with many blockbuster films, including the ‘Avatar’ franchise. Recently, he opened up about what he thinks young filmmakers should keep in mind when making their first-ever project.
James Cameron’s advice to young filmmakers
During a talk with @filmmkrs for his work on ‘
Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour’, Cameron opened up about the advice he has for young filmmakers. In the video, which was recently uploaded on the channel's account, the veteran director stated that the film's cast is one of the most important things to consider.
He stated, “Don’t forget that the most important thing is your cast. Everything you do after that, there’s a lot of latitude, a lot you can screw up. You get it all perfect, and if your cast is wrong, it’s nothing.” The 42-year-old further added that one should “Also, be prepared, because resources are going to be limited on your first film. So you have to move with confidence and authority from one setup to the next.”

Further on, while discussing what filmmakers should consider, the ‘Titanic’ director commented that another major thing people should be careful about is their actors. He advised that one should never restrict an actor’s movements, as it can directly affect the film's flow and the overall story.
Over the years, Cameron has shared a lot of advice for fellow filmmakers in the industry. Last year while talking to Collider, the filmmaker commented on the usage of AI in films and emphasized the importance of prioritizing actual actors. He commented during the interview, “Understand that it flows from unique, lived human experience. Actors don't do generic, they do individual. When we look at the stars, they're idiosyncratic.
