I hate being called a Bond Girl: Goldfinger’s Honor Blackman

When you think ‘Bond Girl’, you think of a femme fatale, oozing grace and sensuousness. These characters, however, also get called out for their sexist portrayals, and it turns out, some of the ladies who’ve played the role don’t find the Bond girl title quite as flattering.

Honor Blackman
“Stop calling us Bond girls, we are women and actresses!” Blackman wrote in a recent essay in a UK newspaper. At 39, Blackman was the oldest Bond Girl when she was cast in the 1964 hit. The actress, now 90, turned her attention to the age obsession that surrounds the spy’s leading ladies, writing, “I just don’t understand why we are still obsessed with age. Or rather, I don’t understand why men are still so obsessed with the age of women. Because that’s really what we’re talking about. Grow up guys! In the days of yore, young men were sent to a mature woman to learn something about love-making, so that they didn’t make complete fools of themselves.”

Fiona Fullerton
Fiona may have essayed the role of Pola Ivanova opposite Roger Moore’s Bond in 1985’s A View To Kill, but earlier this year, she claimed that she too despises the term. “I kind of cringe when I’m referred to as a Bond girl because I’m not a girl anymore. Now, I’m very much of the older fraternity, so I’m a Bond woman.” She, however, took a more a positive view of the changes to the Bond franchise, adding, “In the early days, the female characters were certainly decorative and not an integral part of the story. Over the decades that has changed quite rightly and reflects society.”

Monica Belluci
Belluci made headlines when she became the oldest actress to be cast in the 007 series at 50 – three years older than Daniel Craig. “I can’t say I’m a Bond girl because I’m too mature to be a Bond girl. I say Bond lady, Bond woman,” she said in an interview. When asked about why many fans were upset about her age, she replied, “Because the world is a man’s world. All the laws are made by men. Men think that women, when they’re not able to procreate any more, become old. That is not true – they are still amazing!”

Naomie Harris
Although she’s technically not a Bond Girl, Naomie Harris, who currently plays Eve Moneypenny in the series, was more optimistic about the 007 ladies. When asked if she could be a Bond Girl and a feminist, she replied, “I think you absolutely can now. (Our director) loves strong, multidimensional women. That’s incredibly important to him.”
