In Hollywood, the con artists get to have it all – the pretty women and the big money.
This April Fools’ Day, we pay homage to the slyest and the most deceitful of them all!
Ocean’s 11
This generation’s most well-loved con heist movie, Ocean’s 11 young men managed to glamorize bank robbery in way that we couldn’t have imagined. Set against the backdrop of Las Vegas’ Bellagio, this Hollywood movie brought together con artists from several walks of life – small time pickpockets to big time criminals – who went on to rob three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously in one night.
The Talented Mr Ripley
Starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett – this movie is a non fictional account of the protagonist Mr Ripley (played by Matt Damon) and his many talents (namely lying, cheating and forgery).
1x1 polls
As he goes about conning the people in the script left, right and centre, he manages to pull a fast one on the audience as well.
Catch Me If You Can
Starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hanks, this movie centered around the cat-and-mouse chase between
Frank Abignail Junior and FBI agent Carl Hanratty. From posing as a Pan American World Airways Pilot and bedding several air-hostesses to forging checks all over the Easter Hemisphere – Frank’s con act will be a tough act to follow! The real Frank leaves his movie star alter ego far behind in terms of his exploits as a doctor, a lawyer and a French teacher!
Colour Me Kubrick
In the early 1990’s, a man called Alan Conway went around masquerading as “A Clockwork Orange” director Stanley Kubrick. The film documents this man’s journey as he sets about impersonating the iconic filmmaker and promising people a part in Kubrik’s movie in return of money, alcohol and sexual favours! The most ironic part is that Conway looked nothing like Kubrick but put on an entirely different persona from the latter and still managed to dupe all his victims! “I really did believe I was Stanley Kubrick,” the real Conway admitted once to a magazine. “I could have carried on until the day I died.”
The Sting
Besides laying the foundation for Paul Newman and Robert Redford’s astounding chemistry, this movie was also groundbreaking as it was a first-of-its-kind con caper. Based on the real life story of Fred and Charley Gondorff, in this flick, two con men set out to pull the biggest con on a mob boss.
