Many high profile films have had various untoward incidents before and after their release. Read on to find out which films went through a rough patch while filming.
There are a lot of factors that have bedeviled certain films, ranging from difficult shooting conditions, temperamental cast members or directors, accidents and, of course, schedules going haywire.
In a recent interview, Revenant director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (of 'Birdman' fame) found himself having to defend allegations by some crew members that working on his film, starring
Leonardo DiCaprio, was a “living hell”.

The Revenant (2016) Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki reportedly insisted on shooting in natural light only. This presumably led to a limited number of hours that could be used for shooting every day. Inarritu also wanted to shoot the scenes in a certain sequence. This prolonged the entire filmmaking process.
The filming also reportedly shifted from Canada to Argentina as Inarritu needed a snowy environment. There were also reports from crew members that being on the film set was akin to being in a “living hell”.
The Passion Of The Christ (2004) The film depicts in excruciating detail, the torment that Christ suffered in the final days and hours of his life on Earth. However, there was enough going on behind-the-scenes as well in terms of accidents. James Caviezel, who played the titular role, reportedly suffered from hypothermia, pneumonia and a dislocated shoulder while shooting at various points. He was also accidentally flogged for real during a whipping scene.
The Crow (1994) A tragic accident on the sets of this film resulted in the death of its lead actor Brandon Lee, who was action legend Bruce Lee’s son. During a scene where he had to face an armed assailant, a gun that was supposedly loaded with blanks apparently contained live ammo instead. The gun was discharged and Lee was hit in the chest. He was killed instantly.
Poltergeist (1982) Bad luck haunted the film’s crew not just during the shooting, but months and years after the film had released too. For starters, one of the actresses (Dominique Dunne) was murdered by her ex-boyfriend sometime after the film was released. Her co-star Heather O’Rourke, the young girl in the film, died a few years after its release of a heart attack at age 12.
Apocalypse Now (1979) This is one of Francis Ford Coppola’s best-known films and a must-watch for any aspiring filmmaker. But the film was so beset with difficulties that getting it completed proved to be a Herculean task for the director. Firstly, the film went hugely over budget. Adverse weather conditions (read: hurricanes) wreaked havoc on outdoor sets. Martin Sheen, the lead, reportedly suffered a heart attack and the legendary Marlon Brando’s drunkenness and tardiness also became an issue while filming.
