Hillary Clinton disappointed over 'Barbie' Oscar snub; tells Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie 'It can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold'

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has voiced her disappointment over the big Oscar snub for 'Barbie' maker Greta Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie.

Taking to her social media handles, Clinton shared a message expressing empathy for the acclaimed duo who scored the highest-earning film at the box office in 2023. "Greta & Margot. While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you," Clinton wrote in her note.

She concluded her message with a playful reference to Ryan Gosling's Oscar-nominated tune, 'I'm Just Ken,' saying, "You're both so much more than Kenough."


'Barbie' secured eight nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards, however, the surprise exclusion of Gerwig from the Best Director category and Robbie from the Best Actress category created quite a stir on social media.

The snubs sparked considerable online outrage, drawing parallels to the themes explored in the satirical which delves into the challenges faced by women in gaining recognition in a world lead by men. Novelist Brad Meltzer took to social media, humorously pointing out, "Nominating Ken but not Barbie is literally the plot of the movie."


Gerwig's acclaimed film, which seamlessly blends social commentary and pop culture, grossing over $1 billion at the box office, was widely expected to dominate the major Oscar categories.

Leading man Ryan Gosling, who received a supporting actor nomination for his portrayal of Ken in 'Barbie,' expressed his disappointment, emphasizing the collective talent and brilliance of the entire team.

America Ferrera, who scored her first Oscar nomination for her supporting role in the film, also expressed her disappointment over the snubs for her co-star and director. In a statement, she said, "I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated."


Simu Liu, another actor from the film, praised Gerwig and Robbie for their transformative impact on cinema.

Despite these setbacks, Gerwig received recognition in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for her co-writing contributions to Barbie alongside Noah Baumbach.

While Robbie did not receive a nod in the acting category, her role as a producer places her in contention for an Oscar in the Best Picture race, alongside David Herman, Tom Ackerley, and Robbie Brenner.


'Barbie' faced stiff competition at the box office, particularly from Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer,' which secured an impressive 13 nominations, the highest for any movie this year at the Oscars.
