Helen Gallagher, legendary ‘Broadway’ star and Tony winner, passes away at 98

Popular actress Helen Gallagher, most prominent known for her work on ‘Broadway’, breathed her last on November 24, Sunday at the age of 98.

For her magnificent performance in the Broadway musical Pal Joey, she won her first Tony award. She bagged the Best Featured Actress award for her role as Gladys Bumps in the musical which was released in the year 1957 and was directed by George Sidney.


Helen bagged her second Tony Award for her performance in ‘No, No Nanette’ where she stepped into the shoes of the character named Lucille Early.


Helen’s big breakthrough in New York stages happened with the 1947 musical High Button Shoes where she played the role of Nancy. Known majorly as a Broadway performer, Helen’s most prominent works include ‘Hazel Flagg’, ‘Sweet Charity’, ‘Make a Wish’ and many others.


Apart from her acting performances, Helen also worked as a co-host for the 15-minute talent-discovery program named ‘Manhattan Showcase’ which was aired on CBS television. She played the notable role of the Irish matriarch Maeve Ryan in the soap opera ‘Ryan’s Hope’ which went on air for over 13 years from July 7, 1975, to January 13, 1989.


Helen, apart from theatrical performances, also left an everlasting mark in TV shows and she was nominated for over five Daytime Emmy Awards for her work in serials, where she bagged the awards in the years 1976, 1977, and 1988. Helen has also appeared in the popular police procedural and legal drama series ‘Law & Order’.
