Away from the hustle-bustle in Maharashtra amid which US actor Harvey Keitel is shooting for the film ‘Against Itself’, in which he’s playing killed missionary Graham Staines, his wife Daphna Kastner took a holiday in Jaipur.
She was there with her four-year-old son Roman and Oscar-winning director Jane Campion on a hush-hush, quiet visit.
They reportedly had a good time, shopping, practicing yoga and visiting the surrounding areas.Some cooking lessons also found space in their itinerary. After a recent visit on Diwali, Campion, director of films like “Portrait Of A Lady”, “Holy Smoke”, “The Water Diary” and “Bright Star”, made another trip to the Pink City. Jane’s love of yoga saw her visit her friend, yoga expert Atul Vyas. Describing the visit, Atul says, “They reached Jaipur on March 4 and left on the 9th. After a week-long stay, they flew to Jodhpur.”
Jane is a frequent guest of the Vyas family, famous for yoga and their well-known students like Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman and many more. The youngest daughter of the family, Dr Shiva Vyas Banerjee, composed the musical score for Jane’s film “Holy Smoke”. “Though they were staying in a seven-star hotel, Jane, who’s in love with Indian vegetarian food, expressed her desire to relish some vegetarian delicacies. I made dum aloo, palak ki sabzi and dal chawal as Jane loves them. She asked me to prepare papad ki sabzi also. After a typical Rajasthani home-cooked meal, home-made kulfi was served to them,” says Abha, who even gave some cooking lessons to Jane.
Shopping trip
How can a trip to Jaipur be complete without buying jewellery and some traditional crafts items? Jane and Daphna shopped at some of the city’s famous stores. Impressed with the typical Rajasthani quilted jackets, Daphna told Shiva, “They’re really beautiful. I’ll buy a few for my mother as well. She’ll love them.” On their shopping trip, apart from quilted jackets, they picked up jewellery and home furnishings bought specially from Sanganer. “Her daughter Alice asked her to buy some bed covers and curtains with block prints, so we took her to Sanganer,” informs Shiva, who also gifted them Jaipuri quilts.

Jane, who’d spent a lot of time in Pushkar in ’99 during the shooting of “Holy Smoke”, clearly has developed a special bond with the holy town. She requested Shiva and Atul to accompany her to the holy city. “She was pretty enthusiastic about going there and having some yoga sessions on the ghats of the lake, but it couldn’t happen,” says Shiva. Jane also took a city tour and found too much ‘westernisation’ there. “She spent a few hours sitting on the ghats and gazing at the lake, and said, ‘Something is missing in Pushkar. The lake has lost its charm,’” informs Shiva. “But seeing an old couple taking a dip holding their hands together fascinated her so much that she said, ‘People are so simple here,’” Shiva adds.
