A meadow in San Francisco's

Golden Gate Park

has been named after veteran comedian and actor Robin Williams. The name of Golden Gate Park's Sharon Meadow was officially changed to Robin Williams Meadow by the

San Francisco

Recreation and Parks Commission.

The announcement was made by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Commission on their official website. "After Robin Williams death, the Department was approached by

Debbi Durst

and

Maggie Lynch

, who represent a range community members, elected officials and people working in comedy, to name the area known as Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park in honour of Robin Williams," the release said.

The grassy stretch in Golden Gate Park was the site of an annual Comedy Day that counted Williams among its regular supporters. Williams was found dead at his

California

home in 2014.

Robin Williams, the Oscar-winning US actor and comedian known worldwide for roles that ranged from a cross-dressing dad in "Mrs. Doubtfire" to a New England prep-school teacher in "Dead Poets Society," was found dead Monday at age 63.
Williams, who died in an apparent suicide Monday, was a comic force of nature. The world got to know him as the wild alien in ``Mork & Mindy,'' a comedian who elevated improvisation to an art form and also demonstrated a rare versatility in more serious roles.
Robin Williams moved seamlessly from comedy to drama to tragedy to comedy again during a Hollywood heyday in the 1980s and 1990s. His Academy Award as a supporting actor in ``Good Will Hunting'' came in a drama.
Robin Williams came to fame on the small screen but quickly worked his way into a number of iconic movie roles, in a career that spanned decades and endeared him to multiple generations.
Robin Williams was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for his performance as an inspirational New England prep-school teacher with a love for poetry. The movie was nominated for an Oscar for best picture and won for best screenplay writing.
In one of his most iconic roles, Williams transformed into the elderly Mrs Euphegenia Doubtfire, earning a Golden Globe, an American Comedy Award, Kids' Choice Award and an MTV Movie Award.
In 1997, Entertainment Weekly magazine named Williams the funniest man alive, and the very next year listed him as one of the world's 25 best actors _ a double distinction that made him rare, if not unique.
Robin Williams touched every generation and demographic, making his entrance in a 1970s comic generation with Steve Martin, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Billy Crystal.
Williams was the voice of a genie in ``Aladdin'' and a hyper disc jockey in ``Good Morning Vietnam.'' In ``Mrs. Doubtfire,'' he played a dad who dressed as a woman to see his kids, and in ``Birdcage,'' he played a gay man.
He was an English teacher in ``Dead Poets Society,'' a scientist in ``Awakenings'' and a prisoner of war in ``Jakob the Liar.'' In this year's independent film, ``The Angriest Man in Brooklyn,'' Williams played a man mistakenly told he had 90 minutes to live.
