Glen Powell recalls elaborate jailhouse prank on sister involving Joe Jonas ahead of ‘How to Make a Killing’ Release

Glen Powell shared a hilarious story about the meanest prank he ever pulled on his younger sister Leslie Powell, and it featured his former co-star Joe Jonas. Glen Powell revealed how he and Joe Jonas, both 36, staged a fake arrest call to Leslie Powell. “I did … a prank phone call on my sister [Leslie] with Joe Jonas of getting arrested, and my sister literally was searching in every jail in Georgia for the two of us,” Glen Powell told People magazine. The 37-year-old actor opened up during an exclusive chat with People magazine at a special screening of his new dark comedy film ‘How to Make a Killing’ in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 14.

Joe Jonas figured out a clever way to make it realistic using Google Translate to mimic a collect call from jail. “Joe figured out a way to get - I think it was on like Google Translate - for it to sound like a jail was calling my sister for a collect call, and so … my sister accepted the call, and I basically just pretended like Joe and I hit somebody in a golf cart and that we needed to be bailed out,” Glen Powell explained to People magazine.




Leslie Powell took the hoax seriously and sprang into action. “And my sister took it very seriously. And then I ended the call, and then my sister searched every jail in Georgia looking for Joe Jonas and me,” Glen Powell shared with People magazine. “It was very sweet of her. It showed the dedication that my sister has to me, but I’m not going to do a mean prank on her like that again because she’s too sweet.”

Sibling revenge and bond

Glen Powell confirmed that Leslie Powell got her revenge. “She did get me back. She was salivating to return that favor, I remember,” he told People magazine.

Leslie Powell, 33, is a talented musician and the youngest Powell sibling with her own accomplishments in entertainment. Her music has appeared in TV shows, movies, and commercials, including scores for her brother’s projects like ‘Twisters’ and ‘Anyone But You’. Glen Powell has praised her artistry before, telling Nylon magazine, “Nothing puts me in a better mood than [Leslie’s] music. Remember the name. She’s a star.”

Family ties beyond pranks

The Powell siblings share a close bond. Glen Powell and Leslie Powell also have an older sister, Lauren Powell, 39, who lives near Glen Powell in Texas and is mom to his four nieces and nephews. Glen Powell told Texas Highways magazine in 2023 that family gatherings at their “family ranch in East Texas” feel magical. “Kicking it with the family and gathering everybody, that’s magical,” Glen Powell said.

Glen Powell and Joe Jonas co-starred in the 2022 war film ‘Devotion’ alongside Jonathan Majors. Their prank stemmed from that professional connection turned friendship.
