'Game of Thrones' showrunners reveal SCRAPPED plan for series to end with film trilogy

The controversial 'Game of Thrones' ending may have happened because things apparently didn't go as planned! David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the acclaimed showrunners behind the hit HBO series 'Game of Thrones', confirmed a long-rumoured plan to conclude the series with an epic film trilogy intended for the big screen.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine, the showrunners revealed that the ambitious proposal, initially mentioned by 'GOT' author George R.R. Martin back in 2020, aimed to wrap up the series with a 3-part film rather than extend the story over 13 episodes.


Benioff and Weiss disclosed that they abandoned the films due to a lack of interest from network executives in transitioning the series to theatres. The magazine's profile also delved into the motivations driving Benioff and Weiss's departure from HBO and subsequent partnership with Netflix on the adaptation of '3 Body Problem'. The duo acknowledged the pressures and anxieties surrounding the debut of 'Game of Thrones' and the uncertainties accompanying their current ventures.

“There’s definitely pressure, but then again, when ‘Thrones’ was coming out, I remember having insomnia and being terrified,” Benioff said. “It’s nerve-racking when it’s your first big thing, and it’s nerve-racking when you’ve been at it for a while and people are like, ‘Well, do they still have it?’”


While the 'Game of Thrones' film trilogy remains an unrealized vision, its legacy continues with approximately 7 spinoff series currently in various stages of production. These include 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge King', 'House of the Dragon', 'Aegon’s Conquest', 'Untitled Jon Snow Sequel Series', 'The Sea Snake', '10,000 Ships' and 'The Golden Empire Animated Series'.
