Karla Sofia Gascon is expected to become the first transgender actress to win an Academy Award, if she receives a nomination for Best Actress at the 2025 Oscars for her role in Jacques Audiard's film 'Emilia Pérez'. The film, a Spanish musical crime comedy, recently received the Golden Globe Awards with ten nominations, including Best Picture - Musical or Comedy.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Karla opened up about the intense and often bitter hate she faces online. She expressed that while there is a segment of society that thrives on negativity, there are also many who strive for hope and equality. Karla stated that the hate she receives only fuels her determination, saying that each insult motivates her to celebrate her achievements even more.
She said. "I love it. It's my gasoline to then tell the people of the light: ‘You have won.’ The more people hate me, the more insulting messages they send, the more I say, 'Thank you,' and the more I’m going to enjoy this moment."
Karla revealed that the online harassment includes disturbing death threats, such as wishes for her death or graphic threats of violence. She shared that she has become a target for many, referring to herself as "public enemy number one" for some individuals.
'Emilia Pérez' also won several prestigious awards, including Best Motion Picture - Non-English Language and Best Original Song.
Karla Sofia Gascón is the first out transgender performer nominated for a solo category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
