The entertainment world has been in a tizzy ever since Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on July 21. Several celebs have been talking about the two films and maverick billionaire Elon Musk is the latest to join the growing bandwagon of conservative tweeters who have been finding fault with Barbie’s feminist themes.
The billionaire was seemingly heckled when a meme appeared that compared Barbie to Twitter and Oppenheimer to X, the new name for his popular social media platform. Elon Musk took a potshot at Barbie and wrote, “It you take a shot every time Barbie says the word "patriarchy", you will pass out before the movie ends….”
The tweet has already earned 282K views. A few days earlier, Musk had responded to a tweet by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI who observed that Oppenheimer was unlikely to “inspire young people to pursue a career in physics”. The billionaire had responded with “Indeed” to that remark.
In India, Barbie has come in for some criticism especially from women. It is one of the few countries where the film has not outdone Oppenheimer in box office collections. TV actor Juhi Parmar said in an Instagram post that she walked out of the theatre within 15 minutes as she thought the film was full of sexual connotations and, therefore, inappropriate for her 10-year-old daughter. Singer Sona Mohapatra found the film terrible and Mira Rajput did not take to the song-and-dance feature in the film.
