Djimon Hounsou shares his ongoing struggles in Hollywood as a black actor

Actor Djimon Hounsou recently spoke about the challenges he faces in Hollywood, despite his successful career. Appearing on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, Hounsou expressed frustration over being underpaid and undervalued in the industry.

According to People magazine, Hounsou mentioned that even after working for more than 20 years, earning two Academy Award nominations, and starring in multiple hit films, he still struggles to make a living. He reportedly said, “I’m definitely underpaid” and admitted that financial stability remains a challenge for him.

Hounsou also shared his disappointment about being overlooked by the Academy Awards for his role in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad (1997). He explained that while he was nominated for a Golden Globe, the Oscars ignored his performance. He felt that people in the industry viewed him as someone who had just “come off the boat and the streets” and didn’t consider him an actor worthy of respect.

Speaking on the topic of diversity, the Blood Diamond actor highlighted the need for substantial progress in Hollywood. He noted that while there is much discussion about diversity, systemic racism is deeply ingrained and not something that can be fixed quickly. “This idea of diversity still has a long way to go,” he said.

Hounsou’s remarks shed light on the persistent struggles faced by actors of color, even those with established careers. He believes that the entertainment industry needs to make genuine efforts to address inequality and improve representation both on and off screen.

Despite his challenges, Hounsou remains an inspiring figure in Hollywood, advocating for better opportunities and respect for underrepresented voices in the industry.
