’ proved to be the biggest winner this award season, with the film taking home four awards at the 90th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director to Guillermo del Toro. The film even earned leading lady Sally Hawkins a Best Actress Oscar nomination. However, did you know that the director pitched the film to his leading lady at the 2014 Golden Globes while he was drunk?

The multi-Academy-Award-winning director admitted in an interview that he was actually drunk when he made the pitch and quipped that the story was not one that “makes you sound less drunk.”

Set against the backdrop of Cold War, the film revolves around a lonely mute woman, working as a janitor in a classified laboratory. Her isolated, mundane life takes a dramatic turn when she falls in love with a mysterious sea creature, dragged to the lab from South America.
