Odessa A'zion, who has recently risen to fame for her role in ‘Marty Supreme’ with Timothée Chalamet, has recently made a public statement about one of her latest projects. The actress had been announced as one of the leads for an adaptation of ‘Deep Cuts’, a book by author Holly Brickley. She, however, had faced backlash over the matter after it was revealed that she was cast as a character of Mexican heritage and Jewish heritage.
Odessa Az’ion steps away from ‘Deep Cuts’ adaptation
Taking to her social media on January 28, she announced that she will no longer be leading the much-anticipated adaptation. She cited that she heard everyone and was with them. Her posts were made on her account using the stories feature. She wrote “Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie. F--- that. I’m OUT,” on a blank black background to get her point across and announce that she will no longer be attached to the project.
She further thanked everyone for making her aware of the issue and how she did not stand with what was being done for the adaptation. She added, “I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting.”
The announcement came only weeks before the film was set to start its production process.
More about the backlash on ‘Deep Cuts’ and Odessa Az’ion
The debate started off when someone shared a video of an exchange between a fan and the author, asking whether the character would be rewritten for Odessa. Holly had confirmed that it would be; however, the decision was met with a lot of backlash online, on both the writer as well as the actress.
Many pointed out that the character was supposed to be of Mexican descent, with a Jewish background, and that the creators of the film should stay true to it.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the
