Danny Boyle reveals one thing he regrets about James Bond franchise

Danny Boyle, the director who is getting all the standing ovations for his latest hit ‘28 Years Later,’ opened up about the one regret he has after quitting the James Bond franchise in 2018.

What happened with James Bond franchise?

Boyle, along with the writer John Hodge, was collaborating on the 25th film of the Bond franchise. However, the pair suddenly dropped out of production, stating ‘creative differences.’ The film’s directorial position was replaced with Cary Joji Fukunaga, and saw Daniel Craig’s last appearance as Bond in the 2021 hit ‘No Time To Die.’

In a conversation with Business Insider, when asked if Boyle ever wishes to return to the 007 franchise, he stated, “That ship has sailed.” The only regret he has is that the script written by John Hudge never saw the light of day after they parted their respective ways.

“The thing I regret about that is the script was really good. John Hodge is a wonderful writer,” he said. Furthermore, he mentioned that the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson weren’t impressed by the script. “I don’t think they appreciated how good that script was, and because they didn’t, we moved on, and that’s the way it should be,” he said.

Shedding light on the film’s script, Danny revealed in an interview with Esquire that the script honoured the roots of James Bond. “Weirdly – it would have been very topical now – it was all set in Russia, which is of course where Bond came from, out of the Cold War,” he said in 2022.


“It was set in present-day Russia and went back to his origins, and they just lost, what’s the word... they just lost confidence in it,” he mentioned, adding that even if the producers wanted something original, they never wanted too untraditional.
