Christian Bale transforms into Frankenstein's monster for Maggie Gyllenhaal's 'The Bride'
Christian Bale has taken on many shapes and forms on-screen and his turn as the iconic Frankenstein monster may just be the most impressive.
In a captivating first look still from Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming film, 'The Bride', Bale's mangled, twisted, stitched and stapled-up look was shared in a monochrome photo. Unlike the other Frankenstein monsters over the years, this one sees the character with the word 'hope' tattooed across his chest.
The impressive first look photo took social media by storm, with fans praising the actor for his transformation and expressing their excitement to watch the film.
Gyllenhaal's period piece also stars Jessie Buckley, acclaimed for her performance in 'The Lost Daughter', as the titular Bride.
Set against the backdrop of 1930s Chicago, 'The Bride' reimagines the timeless Frankenstein tale. While Bale is the undead monster, Buckley plays the character of a murdered young woman who is resurrected to a startling new existence. She defies the expectations of her creators as she yearns for love and sparks a transformative social movement.
This marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial following the success of her debut film, 'The Lost Daughter', which not only garnered critical acclaim but also earned Oscar nominations for Olivia Colman in the Best Actress category and Buckley in the Best Supporting Actress category. The film was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Joining Bale and Buckley in this intriguing adaptation are Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening. Behind the lens stands Lawrence Sher, known for his work as cinematographer on the acclaimed film 'Joker'.
'The Bride' isn't the only Hollywood adaptation of Frankenstein in the works. Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is also currently working on his own take of the classic tale, with Jacob Elordi in the lead role. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz.
'The Bride' is slated for its release on October 2, 2025.
