Charlie Sheen was betrayed by director Oliver Stone? Here’s what happened when he lost out on a role to Tom Cruise

‘Two and a Half Men’ star Charlie Sheen has a lot of projects under his belt, as he has been working since 1974. Still, there are a few projects that the actor regrets losing out on, which include the film ‘Born on the Fourth of July.’In a recent interview, the star talked about his experience with the film and how he felt after losing out on the role to one of the top actors in the industry.Sheen had auditioned for and had been looking forward to being cast in the film ‘Born on the Fourth of July,’ however, when the official news came around, he was left with nothing but disappointment. The 60-year-old actor recently featured on the ‘In Depth with Graham Bensinger' podcast, where he delved deep into his career as an actor and shared some of his deepest regrets as well.Talking about the matter, the actor shared that, “Emilio, he calls me. He says, ‘Hey, man. You sitting down?’ And I think somebody died, right? “I’m like, ‘No, what’s going on?’ He says, ‘Cruise is doing Born on the Fourth.' " He further added that he thought it was lovely that his brother Emilio Estevez thought he should be ‘seated’ for the news. Further adding more context to the situation, at the time Sheen had thought the role had been his. He shared that in some of the conversations he had with the director of the film, he was sure that he was the one who was going to be cast as Sergeant Ron Kovic, which is why the news of Cruise’s casting shocked him to the core. He further added that he had meetings with Oliver Stone, but stopped hearing from him after a while. Since there was nothing concrete, the actor could not pursue anything at all. "You can’t lose something you never had,” Sheen acknowledged. “I didn’t sign a contract. There was a handshake,” he revealed. He recalled that the two met at such a place and time that they were both ready to confront the situation, while being drunk. He further explained the event, saying that, “He was like, ‘I just felt like you didn’t have any passion for it. I felt like you lost interest.’ I was like, ‘Well, I didn’t see you. How do you know how much passion I lost or interest that evaporated if we never talked about it again?'"He added that while it was all fine in the end, it was still hurtful for him. He finished the segment by saying that, “Well, it was also the betrayal factor of it. So I was like, ‘Okay, all right.’ You know, Oliver’s been a fan of Tom’s for a long time. It’s a different movie if Tom does it than if I do it.”
