Ben Affleck questions AI creativity; fans say, ‘He’s spot on — ChatGPT will never be able to create anything’
From actors to filmmakers, many celebrities have begun speaking up about the growing use of artificial intelligence and what it could mean for creative work. As AI tools become increasingly common in everyday life, the conversation has grown louder online. Joining the debate, Hollywood star Ben Affleck shared his views during a guest appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience.
“If you try to get ChatGPT or Claude or Gemini to write you something, it’s really sh***y. And that’s because, by its nature, it goes to the mean, to the average, and it’s not reliable,” Affleck said, making it clear that he doesn’t see AI as a true creative partner.
His argument centred on originality, suggesting that such tools often produce safe, average results rather than bold or distinctive ideas, a major limitation when it comes to storytelling.
“I think a lot of that rhetoric comes from people who are trying to justify valuations around companies that are like, ‘We’re going to change everything. In two years, there’s going to be no more work,’” he said. “The reason they’re saying that is because they need to ascribe a valuation for investment.”
His remarks added a new dimension to the debate, shifting the focus from technological inevitability to market-driven exaggeration.
One user wrote, “Thank you, Ben Affleck, for saying it straight — the ‘AI is going to wipe everything out’ narrative is actually part of the hype story pushed by AI companies desperate to justify their inflated valuations.”
Another commented, “Honestly, Ben Affleck actually knowing AI and the landscape caught me off guard, but as a writer, it makes sense.”
Another reaction read, “Wow… this is a great overview of AI — better explained than 99% of what I’ve heard.”
Summing up the sentiment, one user wrote, “Ben seems to speak more thoughtfully on this than 99.5% of people in the space.”

Affleck didn’t stop at the quality of AI-generated writing. He also addressed the fear-driven narrative surrounding AI and job loss, arguing that much of the panic is financially motivated rather than organic.“I think a lot of that rhetoric comes from people who are trying to justify valuations around companies that are like, ‘We’re going to change everything. In two years, there’s going to be no more work,’” he said. “The reason they’re saying that is because they need to ascribe a valuation for investment.”
