James Cameron's 'Avatar: The Way Of Water' was finally released in theatres across the country today. Met with much hype and anticipation, the film recorded huge advance booking sales which reportedly crossed the Rs 30 crore mark.
Following in the lead of other Hollywood releases like 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' and 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', the film was set to be screened round the clock on its opening weekend. With shows premiering as early as 12.01 am and continuing all through the day, it was reported that the move set the box office ablaze in India.
However, while some sectors, especially South India reported huge numbers, there were other theatres that were forced to cancel shows owing to poor footfall. According to reports, the film released across 3,800 screens in the country, was scheduled to hold over 17,000 shows. Sadly, due to poor turnout in some regions, the shows were cancelled.
Those excited to watch the film, took to Twitter to share vent their anger over multiplexes cancelling shows.
"Today booked a 8 AM show for Avatar @greencinemas English show was cancelled after waiting half an hour, these issues keeps on happening in TN theatres," wrote a fan.
Another said, "I have booked tickets for Avatar 3D for today at 9:30 am, for the first half the 3D was a bit off and "No AC" in the movie hall. As soon as the intermission was done the whole screen got bugged and subtitles were turned off and boom the screening was cancelled."
Another shared in disbelief, "Ain’t no way they cancelled the showing for Avatar in IMAX."
"Unfortunately the early morning shows had got cancelled the reason theatre was saying is the team has not given clearance for the show it seems," read another tweet.
Some unconfirmed reports state that the film didn't sell any tickets in select few theatres, prompting the theatre owners to scrap the early morning screenings.
Much like the other Hollywood film, 'The Way Of Water' began advance bookings 15 days before the film's release.
