Since the success of the #MeToo movement, Hollywood has witnessed several women braving the fear of consequences to open up about their stories of assault at the hands of men in power. Over the past few weeks, names of Hollywood A-listers including Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, and Brad Pitt, have been making headlines over cases of alleged assault. 'Call Me By Your Name' actor Armie Hammer, who has been embroiled in controversy over his leaked texts scandal, is under police investigation after a woman alleged she was "violently raped" and "physical abused" during their on-and-off four-year relationship that ended in 2020. The now 24-year-old girl also revealed that during the time of the alleged rape, Hammer repeatedly slammed her head against a wall resulting in bruises to her face, and further committed other acts of violence against her, to which she did not consent. The actor, through his legal team, has reportedly denied the allegations.

Hollywood heavyweight Johnny Depp, who recently lost his libel case to a publication who had the support of ex-wife Amber Heard, was back in the news this week when he sought permission to appeal a London High Court ruling which upheld that he was a 'wife-beater'. Last November, a judge had ruled that Depp had violently assaulted Heard during their tempestuous five-year relationship, at times putting her in fear for her life. The decision came after three weeks of hearings where both parties accused each other of "violent outbursts".

Brad Pitt became the latest star to get tangled in allegations of domestic violence. Reports of the alleged assault came to light during his ongoing divorce and custody battle with ex-wife Angelina Jolie. The actress has filed documents saying that she will offer "proof and authority" to support her claims. According to reports, the documents indicate that the couple's children have agreed to provide testimony about Brad's alleged violence. Eldest son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt has already given testimony and reportedly expressed his desire to drop 'Pitt' from his last name.

Singer Justin Bieber made headlines last June when he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2014. A woman made the allegations from an anonymous Twitter account and said that the alleged assault happened at a Four Seasons hotel in Austin, Texas, on March 9, 2014, which would have been the year Bieber made a surprise appearance at the South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival. Denying the allegations and threatening legal action, Justin defended himself by providing evidence in the form of receipts, emails, social media, and press reports claiming that the alleged incident never happened.

'I believe I can fly' singer R Kelly was in the headlines all of 2020 after being accused of multiple sex crimes, including sexual abuse of underage girls, sex-trafficking, racketeering, production and possession of child pornography, obstruction of justice, and transportation of women and girls across state lines for the purposes of illegal sexual activity. He is currently in jail pending trial. Kelly has denied the allegations against him.
