Ever since Hollywood studios realized the efficacy of superhero movies as money-spinners, there has been no dearth of projects year-on-year, much to the delight of fans of the genre. From stand-alone movies for the mightiest heroes to a bunch of them coming together to save the world from imminent peril, the excitement around superhero movies has never before been this high. And it is only going to get better over the years, with franchises getting bigger or being rebooted with new casts. While 2016’s films Suicide Squad, Batman vs Superman, X:Men Apocalypose, Doctor Strange, Deadpool and Captain America: Civil War had audiences either loving them or hating them, this year’s bunch looks a lot more promising. Here’s a look at some...
For die-hard fans of the man with adamantium claws, this year’s Logan proved to be an emotional farewell, not only due to the fact that it was lead actor Hugh Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine, but also because it ended that chapter of the X:Men universe well, to set the stage for fresh installments and new characters or a total reboot.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 2017) Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Baby Groot (Vin Diesel), Gamora (Zoe Saldanha) and Drax (Dave Bautista) return for the sequel. Set a few months after the original movie, this film will explore Star Lord’s parentage, with Kurt Russell playing his father, while also looking at how this merry band of heroes go about saving the world.
(June 2017) We got a glimpse of what the demigoddess and warrior princess is capable of when Gal Gadot slipped into the character of Wonder Woman and took on Doomsday in Batman vs Superman. This year, she is set to make two appearances, first in the stand-alone movie about her, set during World War I.
So, will we get to see two versions of the Asgardian God of Thunder, given that in the comic universe Ragnarok is a Thor cyborg clone created by Tony Stark? Or will this film capture the events leading to the destruction of Asgard as per Nordic mythology? The first trailer that has been released seems to indicate that it will follow the latter.
Spider-Man Homecoming
July 2017 Step aside Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. It is now young actor Tom Holland’s turn to play the friendly neighbourhood webslinger. Audiences got a brief glimpse of Tom as Spidey in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, when he aligned with Iron Man and fought Steve Rogers and co. We get to see more of him in Homecoming, along with Robert Downey Jr.
(November 2017) At the end of Batman vs Superman, when Lex Luthor is heard muttering ‘But the bells have already been rung, and they’ve heard it... Ding Dong the God is dead... the bell cannot be unrung... he’s hungry and he's found us. He’s coming and he’s hungry... ding ding ding,’ it sets the stage for the arrival of supervillain Steppenwolf and a battle against the joint forces of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg.
