Gru and his Minions are set to take over the box office this weekend as they return to the big screens with the highly anticipated film 'Despicable Me 4'. According to reports, the latest instalment in the animated franchise, is projected to score a $100 million opening at the box office, when it arrives over the 4th of July weekend.

The film which will enjoy an early start at the box office, is expected to rake in one of the highest collections of the year by beginning its box office run with an estimated $125 million collection during its five-day holiday period.

'Despicable Me 4' is expected to dominate the North American box office charts, but it remains to be seen if the film can surpass Disney and Pixar's 'Inside Out 2', which grossed $154 million over three days, and holds the record for the year's biggest opener. 'Inside Out 2' has maintained its box office dominance position for three consecutive weekends and recently became the first 2024 release to cross the $1 billion mark.

The film is expected to boost collections at the domestic box office this July with films like 'Twisters' (July 19) and 'Deadpool & Wolverine' (July 26) slated for their release in the weeks ahead.

The 'Despicable Me' series has a successful track record over the 4th of July weekend with the 2022's spinoff sequel 'Minions: The Rise of Gru', setting a record for the highest Independence Day debut with $123 million over five days. The film ultimately grossed $940 million globally.

Previous films in the franchise also saw strong openings during the holiday, with 2017's 'Despicable Me 3' bringing in $99 million, 2013's 'Despicable Me 2' earning $83.5 million, and 2010's original 'Despicable Me' debuting with $56 million.

Directed by Chris Renaud and co-directed by Patrick Delage, 'Despicable Me 4' features the return of voice actors Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Miranda Cosgrove.
