Anthony Mackie's Captain America is set to make his superhero landing in theatres this weekend with the release of 'Captain America: Brave New World'. According to early box office predictions, the film is projected to score a massive $200 million global debut over the Valentine’s Day weekend.
Directed by Julius Onah, the fourth instalment in the Captain America franchise marks a new chapter with Mackie's Sam Wilson taking over the mantle from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. While early reactions from its world premiere have been mixed, box office expectations remain strong.
According to Deadline, trade experts predict a domestic opening between $80 million and $85 million over the three-day weekend, with the four-day Presidents Day total expected to hit $90 million–$100 million. The film’s genre—a political thriller—has drawn comparisons to 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', which earned $95 million in its three-day debut back in 2014.
Internationally, Brave New World is tracking for a $100 million–$110 million opening over its first five days, pushing the global debut to $200 million. This would be a good start, considering it is the first Captain America film without Steve Rogers as the central hero.
The film follows Marvel’s $1.33 billion box office hit, 'Deadpool & Wolverine', which was released in July 2024. With the film picking up its momentum closer to its release, Brave New World is expected to meet or exceed initial projections.
Advance ticket sales are currently 10%-15% behind 2023’s 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' which earned an estimated $106.1 million, but 40% ahead of 2021’s 'Eternals' which earned $71.2 million.
The movie is set to roll out internationally, kicking off its release in France, Korea, and Italy on Wednesday, followed by Germany, Brazil, Australia, and Mexico on Thursday, and concluding with major markets like the UK, China, Spain, India and Japan on Friday. China is projected to contribute around $20 million, though its impact remains uncertain due to shifting audience trends.
In India, the film will clash with Vicky Kaushal starrer 'Chhaava'. Brave New World features a stellar ensemble cast, including Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson. The film releases in theatres in India on February 14, in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
