SRFTI showcases Bengal’s theatre highlights on screen
Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) hosted an event, Theatre on Screen, from August 9 to 11. The workshop highlighted the history and evolution of the academics of Theatre in Bengali and its portrayal on screen. The festival featured screenings of many major productions that have been recorded for broadcast or as part of a film. This event will also feature a series of discussions by eminent theatre personalities. The event kick-started on Thursday at the SRFTI campus and will go on till the weekend.
The event was inaugurated by eminent writer Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay. Goutam Ghose’s Nataker Sandhane: Utpal Dutt was screened on the first day. Later, another film, Natok Itihas Darpan, by Abhijit Dasgupta, was screened.
The day also featured panel discussions and question-answer rounds, wherein eminent theatre personalities, including Ashoke Viswanathan, Rudraprasad Sengupta, Ashoke Mukhopadhyay, Asit Basu, Sudipta Chattopadhyay, Ananda Lal, Bimal Chakraborty and others, participated.
The second day started with the screening of an hour-long film, Manchageeti Panchajan, by Devajit Bandyopadhyay. There was other screenings, including Abhijit Dasgupta’s History of Bangla Theatre, Jatra in Bengal and so on. There was also be panel discussions by eminent theatre and film personalities all through the day.
The event concluded with the screening of Bengali Theatre through the Ages by Ashoke Viswanathan. The last day also featured a documentary on thespian Badal Sircar. There was also be a panel discussion with Ashoke Viswanathan, Bibhash Chakraborty, Rudraprasad Sengupta and Ashok Mukhopadhyay.
