Debshankar, Chaiti join hands for Biplab’s new play
Actors Debshankar Halder, Chaiti Ghoshal and Anjana Basu are gearing up for a new play, Khelaghar. Theatre worker Biplab Bandyopadhyay is not only directing the play, but will also be seen as part of the cast. His theatre group, Prachya, is planning to take the play abroad as well. The script-reading session has already started and it is slated to premiere in early May in Kolkata. Based on
“Before going abroad in June/July, we have planned to host three shows in Kolkata. We will premiere the play on May 10,” said the director. According to Biplab, the play has been contemporised. “The original play deals with the family of Nora and Torvald Helmer. Here, it is the story of Tomonash and Nira, played by Debshankar and Chaiti respectively. Anjana plays Nira’s friend,” he added. But why choose a century-old play? “A Doll’s House is one of those plays that are still relevant now. The crisis and dilemma of economically independent women and their husbands are still pertinent in our society. Over the years, we have seen that despite economic empowerment, social injustice is still prevalent in our society. Women empowerment is often given lip service. Hence, the play is still relevant. From Sambhu Mitra to Bibhash Chakrabarty many thespians have adapted it. Now, we want to contempor-ise it,” Biplab signed off.
