After offering quite a few hit productions together, including Ruddhasangeet, Boma and others,
Bratya Basu and Debshankar Halder are once again teaming up on stage. This time, the former is going to direct the actor for the theatre group Purba Paschim’s next production. Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s Athoi Jol, the script is penned by Ujjwal Chattopadhyay.
“Debshankar and I have worked together on many occasions. We acted in Mulya recently. Though it is not the first time I’m directing him, but it’s definitely for the first time outside of my own group. We’ve already started our rehearsals,” said Bratya.
Debshankar has already gotten into the skin of the character. “This is a different Bibhutibhushan for us. My character, Shashanka Chandra Mukherjee, is a village doctor who is honest, helpful and thinks about the overall welfare of the area. Suddenly, a woman comes into his life and his otherwise normal married and social life goes haywire. The play delves into the challenges he faces and how he makes a comeback,” the actor told us.
Besides Debshankar, the director and president of Purba Paschim, Soumitra Mitra, will be a part of the cast too. “Bratya and I go back a long way. We have collaborated on many occasions. He directed Chaturanga with us in 2008. In 2010, he did creative workshops with us for Raktakarabi. We share a special bond. While he treats me as his dada, I respect him as one of the biggest theatre personalities of our time. It is wonderful to be able to work with him again.”
