Daminee Benny Basu recalled her love for jatra and the legendary actors who performed on stage over the years. In a social media post, she shared a poster of a production, Neer Bhanga Jhor, and wrote, “I have never loved anything more than acting in my life. Everyone knows that by now. It has been my first love. Like literally. Baba (Asit Basu) was very closely associated with Jatra for a little over 15 years before and around the time when I was born.
So some of my earliest memories, of spectacle and grandeur, roots back to the times when he would take me along on his tours. I was 3 or 4, maybe.
“I hear many contemporary artists talk much about form, content, deconstruction and others without any training, interest or investment into the history of where it all began. Dear Actor, I request you go back and revisit. Revisit, remember and reclaim your roots. Because unless you know where you had started, how will you go where you want to go? What will determine your quest? I say this with a lot of love and humility because I have traveled around the world, learnt from legends, seen and worked with some stalwarts only to remember to return to my base.
“Please watch Jatra. It is important to know where you belong. Who your people are. What they are telling you. What they are teaching.
“Practice. Practice.
“I'm sharing a poster of one of the best productions in contemporary times. Watch and learn from the best please. Kakoli Choudhury. If I ever write an autobiography, I will say how lucky I have been to witness queens like Jyotsna Dutta, Beena Dasgupta and Kalkoli Choudhury on stage in Jatra.
“Please. Don't miss this chance while it's happening in Kolkata.
