Chetana’s iconic 1973 play, Mareech Sangbad, to be released as a film

Arun Mukhopadhyay’s iconic play,

Mareech Sangbad

, has been digitised and soon will be released on an online platform. Arun Mukhopadhyay’s son thespian Suman Mukhopadhyay took to social media to announce the launch. The original play was first staged in 1973. Besides the legendary performance of Biplabketan Chakraborty, the play also featured Suman and Sujan Mukhopadhyay. The play is penned and originally directed by Arun, who also composed the songs. The play was filmed in 1983. In 48 years, the play was staged almost 1,200 times.

On his social media, Suman wrote, “I remember that the day we were shooting ‘Mareech Sangbad’, Kapil Dev was playing his iconic knock of 175 in 1983 World Cup. The film (16mm) version of ‘Mareech Sangbad’ was lost. But, finally got salvaged and digitised after 37 years. The source is a VHS cassette. So please forgive the technical glitches. The original cast of 1972 is all there including Biplabketan Chakraborty’s ‘Meribaba’ and Shibshankar Ghosh’s ‘Ustad’ Also to note that Arun Mukhopadhyay and his progeny Sujan (9) and yours truly (17 then) are part of the cast. Chetana initiated a release of the film version through the app ‘My Cinema Hall’. The release is on 3rd July. A trailer awaits soon… (sic)”
