Anupam Chatterjee designs costumes for a play

For the first time ever,

Anupam

Chatterjee has designed clothes for a play. The characters of Nigel Akkara’s upcoming production – Bewaris – which will be staged in August, will wear clothes designed by Anupam. The play is a political satire, which will see many drug addicts in performance.

The story of the play revolves around a thief, who gets stuck in a morgue. In the meantime, a bus accident takes place, which leaves 26 dead. Among the casualties, 20 bodies are claimed and the rest six are kept in the same morgue where the thief is stuck. The spirits of the six dead prevent the thief from escaping the morgue. “The script has been written by Moloy Bondopadhyay, who is a popular writer in the world of serials,” said Nigel, adding that many of the actors in the play are drug addicts.
Anupam has made a number of pastel-shade costumes. He has mostly used colours like white, beige and olive green. For the only woman character in the play, Anupam has made a special Banarasi and blouse. “The woman is a spinster and also a ghost. I had to

her costumes accordingly,” said the stylist.
Talking about the main reason for choosing theatre, Anupam said that he was touched by the struggle of the drug addicts who are acting in the play. “Hearing their stories and seeing their lives brought tears to my eyes. I was so moved by their stories that I decided to take up the project,” he futher added.
