There is much more to Indian rituals than what we know of and one of those lesser-known rituals is

Bhadu

puja — a festival celebrated in and around

Purulia

to worship

Devi Bhadu

. And it has now become the subject of Spectators’ next play. The theatre group will trace the journey of Bhadu or Bhadraja in their play that will be directed by Sudipto Chattopadhyay. It will also bring Bhadu songs to the fore. One of the lead actors,

Sraman Chattopadhyay

, said, “Devi Bhadu is worshipped only by women and there are no Sanskrit verses for her puja. The devotees sing extremely colloquial chants to worship the goddess. Also, there are many conjectures associated with it. Through this play, we aim to trace the socio-political journey of this ritual since its inception.” Altogether there are 14 characters in the play that will be portrayed by five actors. “All of us had to go through rigorous training to pick up the dialect,” added Sraman.
