The band music scenario is increasingly getting interesting after the rule allowing live shows back in Kolkata. Recently, the city's popular English band, The Urban Monkz, paid tribute to the popular Irish rock band, U2, at a city pub. "St Patrick's Day and a tribute to U2 is always a fun thing for our band. The show was initially slated for 2020, but COVID-19 threw a spanner in the works.
With fellow musicians and friends, it was a fun evening," shared Bucha, who does vocals for the band. Their bass guitarist,
Rajdeep, was also of a similar opinion and loved the reaction from the audience.
The band has been a regular at such events before the pandemic struck. This show saw them belting out numbers like Elevation, One, Sweetest Thing, Desire, Ordinary Love, Walk On, All Because You, Hold Me Thrill, I Still Haven’t Found and Vertigo, among many others. "There are so many good U2 songs that it was difficult for us to leave out some of them to fit it within the gig time," said Nikhil, who was on the guitar. His companion on the guitar, Vishal, was thrilled to see the audience enjoying every bit of their hard work that went into rehearsals. "Preparing the songs was a very moving experience for us, given how the themes of their tracks are relevant in these times. Trying to understand the context and meaning of their songs gave us a fresh perspective on U2's offerings," he said.
Such shows are further enliven by the presence of an enthusiastic and musically-inclined audience. Kolkata sure lives up to such a scenario each time there's a live show. The audience was seen making song requests and singing out loud along with the band members. "Playing a tribute gig is always special, especially when it's time to play the songs of a band like U2 and you have an audience who closely follows such music," said Tutul, the drummer of the band.
