passed away on Monday afternoon in a city hospital. He was 91.

The veteran singer had been suffering from deteriorating health since August and became bed-ridden due to multiple afflictions including severe chest infection. He was admitted to SSKM Hospital on several occasions, the last was at the end of September with severe lung complications.

Dwijen Mukhopadhyay was born on November 12, 1927 in Kolkata. In a career spanning more than six decades, Dwijen became popular as a Rabindra Sangeet singer, a

playback singer

in a number of films and was known as a brilliant composer.

Notable among the hits he sung in films, include ‘Rekho Ma Deshere Mone’ and ‘Akdin Fire Jabo Chole’. He reached the peak of his popularity for singing another sensational hit ‘Jago Durga’.

Among his several achievements he was conferred with Indian government’s second highest civilian honour Padma Bhushan in 2010. He was also awarded
