Shubha Mudgal records a Bickram Ghosh composition for a Bengali film
Percussionist and composer Bickram Ghosh and Hindustani classical singer Shubha Mudgal recently recorded a song for Arindam Sil’s next Mitin Mashi film. Speaking to us, Bickram Ghosh said this was his fourth collaboration with Mudgal and the first for a Bengali film. “She first sang in one of my albums in 2005, but this is the first time we collaborated for a Bengali film song. The song has been penned by Sutapa Basu,” he added. Speaking to us about the song, Mudgal said, “I sincerely hope that the song will be well received by everyone. With the kind of experience Arindamji and Bickram have, they could have just asked any accomplished artiste to record it, but the fact that I got to be the lucky one is special to me.”
Talking about the process of getting Mudgal on board, Ghosh said, “Shubhaji, we all know, has an astounding voice. When Arindam and I were discussing the film and the soundtrack, we came up with the idea that since it is about a forest, which is mysterious, we needed a very exotic voice to suit that mood. When I suggested her name, Arindam was like, ‘Wow! Let us get her to sing it if we can’. Shubhaji has been very close to me for many year now, so when I gave her a call, she agreed right away. She was in Mumbai, so I flew over and we recorded the song on Tuesday evening.” He added that it’s always a pleasure to work with Mudgal. “She is very professional when it comes to work. The recording of the song is complete, it took three hours to record it. Just like everyone else, Shubhaji also has an affinity towards Bengal because of the artistry it houses and the melodies that are produced here. She told me that she loves the creative energy of Bengalis,” Bickram said.
