Drummer Sambit Chatterjee
, son of percussionist
Pt Subhen Chatterjee
, has started a noble initiative where he has opened a musical
thrift store
online to help needy kids or
aspiring musicians
with an interest in music find their instruments.
The initial proceeds from the store has also been donated to a school of underprivileged kids. Talking about this initiative,
Sambit said, “It’s a first-of-its-kind store in our country where we connect people to people who don’t want to own a particular instrument anymore. These instruments are provided to aspiring musicians who are starting their career but cannot invest in high-end instruments. So, we are here to help them fulfil their dreams by providing the same instrument at a much lower price that we have received from other senior artistes as donations.”
Another drummer, Thea Mathias has also collaborated with Sambit in this initiative. She said, “With the recent rise and success of Instagram thrift stores, a thrift store for music related gear was something I was anticipating. When Sambit asked me to collaborate with him I loved the idea and was more than happy to oblige. I’ve known him for a while now and during this time I’ve noticed how willing he is to help out musicians wherever he can. The intention of the store is to give away gear at a nominal price to help encourage young musicians to pursue their passions. As a young drummer myself, I am well aware how expensive it can get especially if you’re a student. This store is such a blessing for us. I’ve been receiving positive messages about this initiative from musicians all over the country. The store also encourages donations of instruments/ gear to music schools. We hope this initiative encourages musicians to keep at it.”
