The Russian Centre of Science and Culture, Gorky Sadan, celebrated 40 years of its presence in Kolkata recently. And boy, did they raise a storm! The event kick-started with a heart-warming performance by Bangla band Dohar, who presented
Dohare dohar dhori, followed by bhatiali, sari gaan and songs by Lalon Fakir.
“It felt great to perform at such a prestigious occasion.
The best part was to see the Russian audience enjoying our music. We also sang
Allah megh de pani de on request from the audience,” said Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee, lead singer of Dohar. That was not all. Like a Russian fairy tale coming to life, the childrens’ dance ensemble Raduga (rainbow) — a company of over 40 dancers — captivated the audience with their colourful folkloric costumes and thrilling choreography. However, the high point of the evening was when the troupe danced to Kalinka and Padmoskovniye Vechera (Moscow evening). Singer Margarita Prokofieva then entertained the crowd with some foot-tapping numbers, eliciting thunderous applause. “I am glad that the audience enjoyed the various dance forms. We hope to have more such shows here,” said Russian vice-consul, Alexander V Mazirka.
