I can’t believe Bachchu bhai will not call me again: Rupam Islam

Fossils frontman Rupam Islam writes about his long association wi... Read More
My first meeting with

Ayub Bachchu

took place in Kolkata sometime around 1998, right after my first album was released. In 1998, a Bangladeshi TV channel used one of my songs along with another by Bachchhu bhai in a telefilm directed by Riingo. I was not aware of that and got to know about it much later. So, Bachchu bhai had already heard my album by the time I met him for the first time. He was staying at a guest house near Golpark, where I went to meet him. After that, we met every time he was in Kolkata.

During his last visit to Kolkata, he came to my house. We sang a lot of impromptu numbers with him on the guitar. We also did a Facebook Live where he said, “This is not the first time I am jamming with Rupam and it’s definitely not going to be the last one.” When I started singing my own numbers, I hardly got much support since I was doing

in Bangla. The two people who supported me from the very beginning was Bachchu bhai and Mac bhai. Bachchu bhai kept telling me back then, “The music happening in Bengal is not rock — the power and aggression are missing. You can bring that aggression. gained popularity. For a certain gig, we were scheduled to perform at Nazrul Manch before LRB. Suddenly, we saw Bachchhu bhai walking on to the stage; he took Deep’s guitar and started jamming on Bicycle Chor. We sang Mon Chaile Mon Pabey and Shei Tumi with him. He also sang Bishakto Manush with us. After the show, Bachchu bhai said, “See, what I predicted then, is reality now. Rock music is here and you have brought about the change!”

Last December, he was in Kolkata for an awards show and I was asked to hand him over the life-time achievement award. On stage, he took a guitar and asked me to sing with him. I can’t believe he will not call me again; I used to receive a phone call everytime he was in Kolkata. He would ask: “Tor basay chole asbo, naki aamar hotel e tui asbi?”
