Singer Antara Chowdhury’s music institute hosted a show to mark the first anniversary celebration of the institute recently at Rabindra Sadan. The event was titled Surer Jharna. Salil Chowdhury, Antara’s father, who was a class composer-lyricist known for his songs on mass movements, non-film Bengali songs and also film songs. He had composed many songs for children known as ‘chhotoder gaan’ mostly rendered by Antara.
During the 1980s those songs got an immense popularity among Bengali listeners. Songs like
O Ayre Chhute Aay Pujor Gandho Esechhe, Bulbul Pakhi Moyna Tiye, Ekka Dokka Tekka, Ek Je Chhilo Machhi and others have been a part of our growing up years. At the event, Antara and her students performed those popular chhotoder gaan created by the musical genius. Chief guest of the event was Haimanti Shukla, and others who visited the event were Shivaji Chatterjee, Arundhati Holme Chowdhury, Kalyan Sen Barat, Saikat Mitra and Manomay Bhattacharya.
