What if we could send love letters to Kolkata? What would have been the lines? Will it be an archaic song? Well, now a group of city artists has joined hands to create something unique dedicated to the city of joy. It will be a photo narrative, sort of an ode to Kolkata!
While
Shieladitya Moulik is set to direct this special narrative video, Ranajoy Bhattacharjee will compose the music.
Debraj Bhattacharya and
Gulshanara Khatun will give their voice to it and the entire video will be edited by Bodhaditya Banerjee. The unique concept will be released ahead of
Durga Puja this year.
Kolkata is the simulation of nostalgias. This city has its paramours as well as beaus. It also reeks with scandalous sweat, heavy traffic, slumber and uncountable ignominies. The celebrated and the honourable ones of this city chose to wrap and shelve some memories.
In the letterbox, Shieladitya tries to explore the restrained and unspoken histories of Kolkata. The annals of experiences, emotions and reflections form the cornerstone of our project. The accounts focus on how the people’s sensitivities and thoughts leave impressions on the ever-changing time-canvas. The coffee shop stands right at that spot where once the mesua trees used to spread the carpet.
Kolkata also spread its wings during the lockdown. The traffic less city sparkled with new memories. To the baffled onlookers, the South Kolkata footpaths adorned with conspicuous red-yellow flowers appeared like the avenues of foreign universities. The Wines of Bo-Barrack or the cemetery of Park Street continues to thrive.
“No one writes or sends a letter to the city. No soft nimble touch tries to soothe its pain down. How does Kolkata reciprocate to all these neglects? Does it shed tears out of humiliation? Does it writhe in silent pain? That’s how this concept emerged. It’s a bunch of letters to Kolkata that we know. It’s a heart-to-heart communication with Kolkata that we hardly know. The letters weaved with music and words have been sent to the sentimental, ecstatic, passionate Kolkata. The replies that have reached us in the form of mobile phone documentations reveal the layered complexities, the overlapping dynamism of the present histories of the city. Like an unfamiliar bioscope, the vigour of the city unfolds before us,” shared Shieladitya while speaking about this new project.
