Subrata Sen’s debut documentary,
Kali
, is winning accolades here, there, everywhere. After making a mark at World Film Awards (WFA) and Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), here’s yet another recognition for Kali. It has recently been honoured with the Award of Merit at
Impact Doc Awards
.
“Kali is my first documentary. It’s my take on the dichotomy of the plight of dark-skinned girls and Bengalis worshiping Kali as the revered god. During 2011 elections, I was travelling throughout Bengal for a television channel. I found fairness creams being sold in every small rural shop. Also, there’s one Kali Mandir in every village. That sparked off the idea of this documentary,” he said. Sen started filming it in 2013. “A news report came in 2015 that a girl had committed
suicide
in Tamluk because she was dark and was rejected several times by prospective bridegrooms in an arranged marriage situation. That gave further impetus to my documentary,” he added.
