films. “I am moving on from the indie, low-budget films and stepping into commercial Bengali film. Bilu Rakhhosh was the last independent film I worked on and Indrashis’s (Acharya) second film Pupa will release on the same day as Bidaay Byomkesh,” said the actor who, by his own admission, is venturing into commercial Bengali films.

“The offers I used to get in commercial films when I first stepped into Bengali films with Patalghor were not tempting,” Joy added. “Around 17 years ago, the acting space used to be limited in those films. I could never match up to those films’ sensibilities. However, things have changed with directors like Srijit (Mukherji) and Arindam (Sil). Now, we have interesting plots, scopes for characterisation and this change took place due to intelligent and cinematically sound directors,” he said.
