Director Sanghamitra Chaudhuri is hopping mad. Busy with the last-minute preparations of her third Bengali film, she was in for a rude shock when told that there were reports of she directing a film with Shoaib Akhtar and Hansika in the lead! Its such a lie! Im here in Kolkata during the Pujas.
How can I also be shooting at the same time in a village in Punjab? I admit that there were talks about doing Main Aur Meri Himmat with Shoaib Akhtar and Hansika. Way back in 2007, we had decided to make a film on how a Pakistani cricketer falls in love with an Indian girl while touring our country. I had met Shoaib to discuss the script. We had even offered him Rs 2 crore to be a part of the project. Hansika was offered Rs 25 lakh.
We had zeroed in on Hansika because she had an innocent face. Besides being a good actor, her roots are in Punjab. She would be just right for the role of Himmat, the cricket-obsessed girl in MAMH. Just before we were supposed to start the project, the IPL began. Shoaib was contract-bound not to do anything during that period. Benazir Bhuttos death and the terror attack in Mumbai subsequently disbalanced the cultural ties between India and Pakistan.
Finally, the producers backed out of the project, she said.
Meanwhile, Sanghamitra got busy with Jeena: The Endless Love, a Bengali film on domestic violence. Sometime around 2007, I had gone to do a recce in Punjab. I was also supposed to go down to Lahore. However, we didnt shoot a single scene of the film, she said, adding, If one has to make the film now, it will mean reviving it from scratch though Rs 5 lakh has already been spent on pre-production.
