What's the mystery?

Director Subhrajit Mitra, who is done shooting for 'Sinduk Rahasya', shares his haunting experiences at the Baruipur Rajbari.
What's the mystery?
Subhrajit Mitra is back in the city after having canned the shots for 'Sinduk Rahasya', the third in the 'Kakababu' series. Produced by a private Bengali channel, these ventures will have a theatrical release. The film-maker was on an eight-day shooting schedule at the Baruipur Rajbari.
He elucidates his experience behind the camera. 'The plot of this film revolves around finding a mystery chest belonging to Nana Sahib.

As for the cast, I have roped in Sumanta Mukherjee to essay Kakababu and Aritra to play Santu. Then there is Sutirtha, who plays Jojo, Kousani essays princess Kamalika, Mumtaz is Debolina and Tina is the evil queen, Rajeshwari.'
Ask him why he zeroed in on that particular place and Subhrajit answers, 'It is my relative's house and this is the first time that I have ever visited the place. As to why I have shot there, it was because the location matched the storyline. But one has to indulge in certain modifications while shooting. And this time around, we had to recreate the antique chest and an underground tunnel.'
The director then goes on to share some strange encounters that he and his team had to experience while shooting. 'My technical team knew that there is a jinxed room in the palace. In fact, this room is a separate mahal all together. I was told that no one disturbs the furniture in that room. And if one does so, then there is bound to be some untoward incident. We were also told that one is not supposed to shoot there post 8 pm. The story goes that a person had died in that room.'
But as luck would have it, on a certain day, Subhrajit had to shoot in that mahal till 1.30 am. Though the rest of the team were apprehensive about the same, the director, in particular, isn't one to believe in such occurrings. 'But when everyone on your team keeps mentioning the same thing, then one can't help but start thinking that there might be something more to the stories,' says the director, adding, 'Curiously enough, right from the morning itself, we started having to deal with some sort of mishaps. First, Kousani's car met with an accident and the right side of the vehicle fell into a ditch. Then, she had kept an outfit with the dresser, the right side of which got burnt for some strange reason.'

But that was not all. A song sequence was shot on a palanka in the 'haunted' room and 'when we went to check the sequence and I positioned myself on the bed, the entire thing broke down, resulting in me bruising my right arm. We put the whole thing together only to meet with a similar fate soon after,' adds Subhrajit.
While shooting in the tunnel, which was recreated just beneath the mahal, all of a sudden, current started passing through the camera and monitor making it almost impossible for the unit to continue work.
The next day too, all was not well on the sets. 'It had just rained heavily and we were getting ready for a long shot. The actors were in the courtyard, while the camera was positioned on the terrace. My assistant director was there with the actors coordinating the shots. For some strange reason, he slipped and ended up with a hairline fracture on his right arm and a swollen eye.'
Having had a fateful shooting experience, Subhrajit is relieved that all is finally over. 'I have tried not to disturb any spirit though everyone was dead sure that those were the goings-on of something evil,' the
director signs off.
