Anumita Dasgupta’s film Bahaman starring
Soumitra Chatterjee,
Aparna Sen,
Bratya Basu, Arpita,
Goutam Halder, Shonali Sanyal and others revolves around two long lost lovers — Dr Salim Khan and Madhuri Chatterjee — who have reunited after 50 years of separation, stemmed due to various religious and social restraints. Conflicts arise when Salim, now a bachelor, and Madhuri, who lost her husband, decide to live together. There are acceptance issues by Madhuri’s son Dr Subrata Chatterjee. The complex relationship between a mother and her son, and a woman and her long lost lover come to a crossroads when they threaten to compete with each other.
According to Arpita, who plays Joyeeta (Aparna Sen’s daughter-in-law in the film), working in this film was a blessing in disguise. “With such actors on the sets, it was more of a learning process for me. Each day of the shoot, I learnt something or the other. With Rinadi (Aparna) around, I learnt so many nitty-gritties of acting and body language,” said Arpita. Talking about her character in the film, Arpita said, “Joyeeta shares a wonderful relationship with her mother-in-law where each treats the other as an individual. So, there is immense mutual respect and understanding.”
Arpita, who is having a gala time with son Trishanjeet, said, “He is in town for
Diwali. My son has so many questions that, at times, I am tired of answering them. He asked me from whom I learnt to greet Subho Bijoya and who was the first person I had said that to. Actually, I can’t even remember that! Now, the two of us are only watching films since he is my theatre-going partner.”
