Madhur Bhandarkar’s latest tweet comes as a big surprise. The Bollywood director on Saturday issued a clarification regarding a new film to continue the legacy of Apu created by
Satyajit Ray. The Apu Trilogy - Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) – is widely regarded as the auteur’s cult classic which started the neo-realist movement in Indian cinema.
Incidentally,
Madhur Bhandarkar is the co-presenter of this new film.
The latest film in the Apu series will be directed by
Subhrajit Mitra and has been titled as ‘Avijatrik’. It will start from where the story of ‘Apur Sansar’ ended based on a specific chapter of the iconic Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay novel ‘Aparajito’s which Satyajit Ray didn’t adapt in his 1959 film. The announcement confused the netizens whether Bhandarkar is remaking the Apu Trilogy.
However, the ‘Chandni Bar’ director, in the latest clarification issued on Twitter, made it clear ‘Avijatrik’ is not a remake of any of the Apu trilogy films. He wrote: “We are not touching the films made by Satyajit Ray,” and also added he is “a big fan of the legendary filmmaker who helped Indian cinema reach global audiences.”
