Upal and Chandril turn filmmakers

One of their band members has already done it by crossing over from music to movies. And now, others too seem to be following suit. After Anindya Chattopadhyay wrapped up the shoot of his second film, Projapoti Biskut, here’s news that vocalists of Chandrabindoo — Chandril Bhattacharya and Upal Sengupta — have also completed their first short film together — Talent. Directed by Chandril, the short will see Upal doubling up as both the cinematographer and the editor.
“I had a one-line concept, which was developed by Chandril.While Subham and Partha are the cinematographers, a part of the camera work was done by me. Tito has designed the sound and I did a crash course in editing from Arghyakamal Mitra,” explained Upal. About the story, which is a satire, he said, “One morning, a poet wakes up to find another man by his side. He gets scared thinking the other man is a thief, but he introduces himself as ‘talent’, who had remained with the poet for long and has now decided to leave for good. The concept was born out of the fear that is common in creative fields. Like our songs, this short too will speak of our times. ”
The shoot took place in the first week of May in Kolkata at three locations. Apart from a house on Padmapukur and a bar, the team also shot in Bangla Academy. “Indranil Sen helped us a lot to get the latter,” said Upal, who is yet to decide on the release of the short. “We are not thinking of sending it to festivals; it will eventually get released on YouTube,” said the singer. Curiously, the short is sans music — songs or background score. “It’s a dialogue-based film. The way the short progresses, it is hard to incorporate music,” he explains. Chandril had last made Y2K, a diploma film, which is available online. With Talent, he will debut as a professional director. Chirantan Dasgupta plays the poet in the short and Anirban Bhattacharya, Talent.
