Tarun Majumdar to talk about peer Satyajit Ray

Between them, it was a mutual admiration club. This year, Tarun Majumdar will deliver the famed Satyajit Ray Memorial Lecture on April 27, ahead of the master filmmaker’s birthday on May 2. While Sharmila Tagore spoke about her experiences of working with Ray last year, Naseeruddin Shah did the honours in 2017.

Talking about the event, Arup K De, CEO of Satyajit Ray Society, told us, “As far as I know, they shared a great rapport. Tarun Majumdar liked the works of Ray and also wrote about them in publications. Ray, on his part, was equally respectful towards Majumdar’s works.” About organising the event way ahead of May 2, he said, “On that day, several visitors make it to Ray’s Bishop Lefroy Road residence. That’s why we organised it in advance.” While the event will be held at Sisir Manch, the adjoining Gaganendra Shilpa Pradarshasala will host an exhibition of Ray’s illustrations from Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne. “There will be around a dozen still photographs by Nemai Ghosh, but a major chunk of the exhibition will comprise Ray’s sketches and illustrations from

,” said Arup. The exhibition will end on April 30.

When we spoke to Tarun Majumdar, the octogenarian director told us, “Yes, I will be delivering this year’s Satyajit Ray Memorial Lecture, but I can’t share the content just yet.”
